ht dhough1976 and Think Progress

This video is from Congressman Dan Lipinski’s Town Hall Meeting last week.   In it, Midge Hough attempts to tell the story of her daughter-in-law Jennifer. The 24-year-old was 7 and half months pregnant when she became ill.

The teabaggers scoff and shout.

She went to a hospital.  She had no insurance.  She was told she had bronchitis and was sent home.   The next day, her condition worsened and her husband took her to a different hospital.  He told the admissions desk they did have insurance.  Jenny was seen and diagnosed with severe double pneumonia, septic shock, and respiratory failure.  She was put on a respirator for the next 55 days.  She had a heart attack, a stroke, a brain bleed, and her baby died in the womb.

The bill amounted to over a million dollars and Hough makes the observation that the cost of that bill is going to be spread around to consumers.

Teabaggers laugh.

Hough cannot continue her point however because of the hecklers in the crowd, the legitimate face of GOP constituency: teabaggers.

The teabaggers aren’t fighting for Americans and the American way.  They are fighting for insurance companies to continue to have the power to screw people over, essentially the power to say, your money or your life.

Hough begins telling her story at 1:47 in.

  1. i saw this earlier today, and i thought it was one of the most disgusting displays the teabaggers have ever put on (which is saying a lot). to heckle a woman who lost her daughter-in-law at such a young age and her grandchild is beyond the pale.

  2. I’m on your side, don’t get me wrong or anything, but the editing of that video is very suspect. She was heckled once, but then the room went silent. At the end we see a cutaway to a photo of some guy smiling, but it could just as well be any photo inserted at the right moment to make it look like he’s laughing at the death of her daughter and grand-daughter… so could the photos of the people standing up and cheering. Sure, I wouldn’t put it past these people, but if the video had showed the presentation in real time, it would be more believable. As it is, it looks manipulated to make a point.

    • They make it hard to give them slack, though, because their own lies are so egregious, getting as close to *literally* p*ssing on your head and telling you it’s raining without actually, you know, whipping it out and thinking of England.

I’d say “a very damp England,” but *England* is a very damp England, so there you go.

    • I noted as I wrote this up the woman telling the story has the same last name as the youtube id. I imagine a family member put the video together. You’d obviously have to use two cameras to get the speaker and the crowd faces reacting at the same time.

We heard the first heckle, WHY DIDN’T SHE HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE? WHY?

Later Hough calls out audience members laughing at her. More scoffs follow. She gives up the mike and it fades to black. Presumably the photographer then shows the people who were laughing when he brings up the still shots.

Teabaggers have orchestrated an effort accusing the Houghs of not having a daughter-in-law named Jenny. The Houghs have been questioned about the veracity of Jenny’s pregnancy. They’ve been accused of being Obama operatives sent to distract from a real dialogue. However, news reporters in Chicago have verified the Houghs story.

Since I’ve seen insanely vituperative comments directed at the sick and those trying to make the case that the U.S. health care system is broken, I had no problem with the Houghs’ POV. In fact, I like seeing that SOB with the tan stripes being singled out and held up as a symbol of depravity.

Just last week, I read page after page of comments saying a sick person was genetically defective, it wasn’t hospital or insurance company’s fault they got sick and died. Or they didn’t have a proper diet and that’s why the patient got cancer and had a bad heart.

  3. Disgusting. Absolutely horrifying that THIS kind of display is considered ‘the way to go’ by these idiots.

They are so stupid they don’t even realize they are placing the very power they say want to take away squarely into the hands of the insurance companies and the corrupt lobbyists who are paid generously to keep ‘the other half’ at bay.

Not one of them has an IQ higher than a retaining wall …
