Frank Matthews of Birmingham had Justice with a capital “J” on his mind at the 44th Annual Bloody Sunday March. Matthews’ message went to guest speaker and the top attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice:
“…That’s why we’re saying to Eric Holder [U.S. Attorney General] ‘Don’t be a coward. Get rid of Alice Martin. Don’t be a coward. Get rid of Leura Canary. Don’t be a coward. Get rid of [Judge Mark E.] Fuller because he’s full of it, and let Don Siegelman go free!'”
Martin remains U.S. Attorney of Alabama’s Northern District while Canary reigns in the state’s Middle District. Both are Bush appointees and referred to in Congressional testimony as “Karl’s girls.” …As in Karl Rove, the former Bush advisor, suspected of political meddling to lawlessness at DoJ.
Matthews and other Siegelman supporters spent a portion of their day in Selma explaining one-on-one to dozens of out-of-staters and young people what exactly happened to Alabama’s former governor.
On March 6, 2009, the 11th Circuit Court threw out 2 of Siegelman’s convictions; however, he is supposed to be resentenced for the remaining 5 by Judge Fuller.
Siegelman, still out on bond, attended the march also.
