Americans get all atwitter when former presidents form a cluster. This photo, however, set me immediately in a posture of defense for Former President Jimmy Carter given the snubs he routinely endures. The man is still a brilliant statesman besides being the Energizer Bunny for Peace. He is a plain dealer, pulling no punches in his assessments of the conflicts in Israel. In today’s Washington Post, he writes “An Unnecessary War.” He acknowledges indisputable acts of terror committed by Hamas but does not gloss over Gaza’s humanitarian crisis:
We knew that the 1.5 million inhabitants of Gaza were being starved, as the U.N. special rapporteur on the right to food had found that acute malnutrition in Gaza was on the same scale as in the poorest nations in the southern Sahara, with more than half of all Palestinian families eating only one meal a day.”
Politics never trump compassion for Carter, and that’s why I’d like to give Clinton a swift crotch kick for not filling in the gap between him and the oldest living American President.
