It is with the heaviest heart and through many tears that I share this story.  My fight for health care reform is a personal one, and one that I feel I need to share. –Veronica De La Cruz, Huffington Post article

I’m thrilled to see Eric De La Cruz’s story being told to an audience as massive as The Huffington Post.  Some of the commenters briefly shared their stories about losing loved ones or loved ones losing everything because of the system that’s in place now putting patients at the mercy of insurance companies.

The grief is difficult to wade through, but I figure, as I figure when I want to dodge any story that’s too painful, if they could live it, the least I could do is read it.

Fort Hood shooting suspect Major Nidal Malik Hasan picked off fellow soldiers with two handguns.   Thirteen are dead.  30 people are injured.  Lt. Gen. Robert Cone explains one of the weapons was reported to be semi-automatic.  The first responder was a woman who stopped Hasan’s killing spree by shooting him.   She was specifically mentioned by Cone; however, he also praised the efforts of the base’s military and civilian police and the soldiers themselves who ripped off their own clothing to start administering first aid to the wounded immediately.

The gunman shot at a facility where unarmed military personnel were receiving medical and dental treatment.

Hasan is in stable condition.

On the House floor, Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) read the number of people who would die due to no health insurance coverage in Republican districts around the nation.   Grayson refused to yield time when interrupted.  Eventually, Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) asked the clerk to take down the words of the congressman from Florida.  This lead to an adjournment, but Grayson was right back at it when the House reconvened.

Grayson also listed some of the names of those who died with lack of coverage.  He’s been compiling names at his website: Names of the Dead.

The Congressional Budget Office reported Wednesday that the Republican Health Care plan would only help 3 million people whereas the Democratic plan extends coverage to 36 million.

Johns Hopkins School of Medicine learns that children without health insurance are 60% more likely to die from serious illness than insured kids.  The information was gathered for a study that began in 1988 and wrapped up in 2005.  In the 37 states that participated in the research, 117 million children were hospitalized.  Six million children were uninsured and 38,649 died in the hospital.  The most common causes for hospitalization were complications from birth, pneumonia, and asthma.

Southern, Midwestern, and Western states had higher mortality rates than the Northeast.

Uninsured kids appeared to have an increased risk of dying no matter what their illness was.  The study’s results do not include children who died without hospital care or after discharge, which of course means the death rate of non-insured kids is likely higher.

If you haven’t signed the petition for Eric’s Law, please consider it.  Maintaining the current system is not acceptable.

Here’s a great big thank you from Veronica De La Cruz.  She pushed for a goal of 500 signatures by midnight last evening petitioning Congress to do Health Care Reform right.  That means a public option to guarantee competition.  Americans do not deserve to be left at the mercy of ruthless insurance companies.  And it means preexisting conditions may not preclude individuals from receiving care.

Her determination paid off, and well before midnight more than 500 people signed.

Naturally, since she never stops, she upped the call to a thousand signatures by the weekend.  Let’s face it, the fatter the petition, the better impression it makes.

If any of you are so inclined, please ask your friends and family members to sign, too.   The present number is 549 signed.

Honoring her brother's memory with Eric's Law

Since TV Guide reporter Veronica De La Cruz lost her brother in July 2009, she has carried his story from coast to coast hoping Eric’s life and struggle would move people to understand the urgency and necessity of real health care reform.

When does she breathe?

She is hoping to get 500 signatures by the end of today on a petition that lobbies Congress for meaningful reform, one that includes a public option and prohibits discrimination based on preexisting conditions.

Forty-five thousand people die for lack of insurance each year under our present system, and polls indicate support for the public option has never been greater.  Americans must not let Congress leave people at the mercy of the same insurance companies that deny care and claims now.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney reminds everyone he’s older than Satan by whipping out the word “dithering” in an attempted criticism of his cousin President Barack Obama.

The five time Vietnam War draft dodger Cheney criticized Obama during a speech Wednesday to the 15 or so neocons at The Center for Security Policy who still give a crap about what he says. He described Obama as “dithering” and “waffling” in Afghanistan.

Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) distanced himself from Cheney’s remarks, and Ohio’s bitchin’ Senator Sherrod Brown (D) notes:

To listen to Dick Cheney who was the mastermind of the most failed decade of foreign policy that this country has had at least in my political lifetime, perhaps my whole lifetime, perhaps my parents lifetime, too, [perhaps since humans invented politics]–I mean to listen to him when he talked about “dithering,” and their mistake was to attack Iraq and lose sight of Afghanistan…just take Dick Cheney’s advice off the table.”

Obama’s eighth cousin once removed and Cheney’s spawn, Liz is the only one that seems to be into her dad. She had a post on her website KeepAmericaSafe.com about Papa Evil no sooner than he uttered the words. Columnist David Corn is wondering why the Cheneys are helping Obama.

National Geographic tells the story of a girl born with a full extra set of limbs in India. Lakshmi Tatma is believed by the people in her village to be the reincarnation of the many-limbed Hindu goddess Lakshmi who the child is named for.

The child underwent an operation to remove the extra limbs because the condition is a life threatening one. Thirty surgeons assisted Dr Sharan Patil during the surgery. Lakshmi was born on the day devoted to the celebration of the four-armed Hindu deity Lakshmi. Her mother Poonam Tatma says she believes her daughter is “a miracle, a reincarnation” of the goddess.

McAulliffe blames the current administration’s aversion to Fox on the network’s calling Obama a racist and its refusal to air the speech on health care during prime time (Fox aired something like “So You Think You Can Dance.”)

But Karl Rove brings the funnies by comparing Obama to Nixon and accusing the White House of having an enemies list.   Rove would know about enemies lists!   It’s hysterical unless you remember the people who suffered political prosecution and/or persecution in the Bush Justice Department under the guidance of Rove:

The Bush Administration gave Fox News unfettered access and dictated Fox’s talking points. Dick Cheney boasted that he only watched Fox.

Cigna Insurance has more than the power to sentence patients to death.  CIGNA can also sentence premium paying customers to pain, excruciating pain.

Georgia resident Dawn Smith was diagnosed brain tumors in 2005 and 2007.   Smith fought every step of the way for CIGNA to cover her biospy and some medication payments, but as for treatment that could stop the immoblizing shocks of pain she experiences; CIGNA called the treatement “unnecessary.”  It’s just cost effective for CIGNA that Smith live with debilitating pain.  Earlier this month, CIGNA increased her anti-epileptic meds to more than $3,000 a year.

Moveon.org has helped her launch a nationwide campaign drawing attention to her plight and the suffering of others.

CIGNA has a long history of denying care for its own policyholders. One of the most infamous cases involves Nataline Sarkisyan, a 17-year-old who died after CIGNA refused to cover her liver transplant. When Nataline’s mother requested a meeting with CIGNA officials, employees of CIGNA reportedly started heckling her from a balcony above the building’s lobby, with one giving her “the finger.”

CIGNA’s not alone in their depravity.  A friend of mine heard The UCLA Transplant Center staff snickering about her  in the background when she made repeated calls for a surgery that might have saved her brother’s life.

So, what’s that foul wind on the air in America today?  Why it’s no more than the hot, nasty breath of conservatives huffing and puffing over President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize.

Yeah.

Limbaugh asserts the award is a diabolical plot by the international community to stop a surge in Afghanistan.

“Affirmative Action,” decries Erick Erickson of Red State dot Shit Fer Brains.

“What has President Obama actually accomplished?” marvels RNC chair Michael Steel.

And the RNC in a front of united douchebaggery made this statement:

It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights.”

Former UN jester Michael Bolton says, “He should decline.”

Fox News tool Bill Kristol gnashes his teeth, “Shoulda gone to John McCain.”

And the very, very, very, very conservative Taliban calls the prize, “Unjust!”

In fairness to them all, it can’t be pleasant having your balls cut off.
