Bush Lies Counted Again

Rep. Henry A. WaxmanA newly released study finds President Bush and members of his administration issued hundreds of false statements about the threat posed by Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA) is four years ahead of the study’s findings. Waxman had a tally of Bush Administration lies documented for the House Committee on Government Reform back in March of 2004. His report was called Iraq on the Record.

The Center for Public Integrity and the Fund for Independence in Journalism counted 935 false statements in the two-year period finding that in speeches, briefings, and interviews, Bush and administration officials stated unequivocally on at least 532 occasions that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or was trying to produce or obtain them or had links to al-Qaida or both.

Waxman’s findings were compiled in much less time, but still offer extraordinary detail:

Administration Documented Lies | Iraq on the Record Report |By Representative Henry Waxman
Liars # of Lies # of Appearances Time Span Biggest Liars
President Bush 55 27 09/02-07-03
VP Dick Cheney 51 25 03/02-01/04
Donald Rumsfeld 52 23 05/02-11/03
Colin Powell 50 34 04/02-10/03
Condoleeza Rice 29 16 09/02-09/03

Although Ms. Rice had the fewest public appearances and the fewest misleading
statements, she had the highest number of statements — 8 — that were categorically false.

Revisit the madness for yourself:

  1. Why doesn’t Congress do something? Isn’t this the crime of century? Even without an empowered Democratic majority, you’d think Republicans would want to hold them accountable and take pride in cleaning up their own back yard.

  2. Your frustration is mine. Is voting the only recourse citizens have? And that hasn’t done much good.

  3. What did Rice say? “We don’t want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud.” Yeah, that was a doozy.
