SANXENXO, SPAIN – What do you get the woman who has everything, who has seen everything? Ninety-five year old, Maria Amelia Lopez received a blog for her last birthday. Her grandson, Daniel, was the giver, and he helps Lopez by taking dictation. Her header reads in both Spanish and English, “Today, it’s my birthday, and my grandson, who is very stingy, gave me a blog.”
Lopez has risen from the obscurity of internet illiteracy to cyber star. “…I thought a blog was just a type of paper notebook,” she says. Her website boasts of a half million visitors since December. Lopez became interested in getting online when she saw her grandson surfing and realized a person could look up anything online.
Lopez’s site, http://amis95.blogspot.com/ , is a charming one. Readers see for themselves the last 10 months have been quite an adventure. She documents more than the present; she offers a glimpse of her long and rich life that spans almost a century. She speaks of a carefree youth eventually lost to the ruthlessness of the Spanish Civil War then the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco. Fast forward, Spain’s Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has written to congratulate her on her blog.
Lopez advises other seniors to take up blogging, too. She says, “I was always talkative, but now I feel more wanted, embraced, because so many people write to me.” Lopez’s map plotter of web visitors show just how embraced she has become.
