S.S. Bajwa, the deputy mayor of Delhi, India, died Sunday after being attacked by a pack of monkeys.
Bajwa sustained fatal head injuries when he fell from the balcony of his home trying to fend off the wild animals.
Monkeys roam the streets of Delhi like pigeons in New York City. Delhi has attempted to keep monkey populations down by relocating them to forests. The animals often make themselves a nuisance by infiltrating government buildings and temples. They also steal food and scare tourists.
Mass killing is seen as an affront to Hinduism’s devout, who view the monkey as a divine manifestation of the god Hanuman. Animal experts in Delhi have trained langur monkeys to chase off the Rhesus macaques. However, the problem is ongoing. Urban development has been blamed for destroying the monkeys’ natural habitat.
Mr Bajwa is survived by his wife and a son.
