J.K. Rowling shocked fans at Carnegie Hall by announcing her character, Albus Dumbledore, is gay. The revelation came in response to a member of the audience asking if Dumbledore ever had true love. Rowling read excerpts from her final installment of her Harry Potter series, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” She took questions afterwards.
The news of Dumbledore’s sexual orientation was met with gasps and applause.
Rowling explained that Dumbledore was in love with Gellert Grindelwald, during the time early in Dumbledore’s life when he was on a quest to discover the deathly hallows. Grindelwald eventually became a dark wizard that Dumbledore defeated.
Rowling told fans that she had to apprise the director of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” that Dumbledore is gay because of a script reference to the wizard and a girl he was supposed to be interested in.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows sold 11 million copies in the first 24 hours after going on sale in the U.S. and the U.K.
